What is the validity of adulteration in some brands of Indian spices?

Mohamed Shalaby - | Business

Dubai Municipality confirmed that it is examining media reports stating that some types of popular Indian spices may contain dangerous substances that may be carcinogenic.

The Dubai Municipality released a statement saying, "We do routine testing on all food items in the country on a regular basis, and the results of this testing do not indicate any cause for worry. However, regular procedures will be followed and we are well aware of the worldwide announcement and recalls.

The ethylene oxide, a material that is legal in moderation proportions, was found to be present in the Indian spice brands under investigation at amounts that were above what is allowed in several other countries. In the UAE, nevertheless, it is strictly prohibited.

The actions being taken in relation to the issue were further explained in DM's statement. Before making judgments, we carry out risk assessments and lab testing, among other procedures. It stated, "Any concern will be addressed to ensure the protection of public health."

Recall orders and inquiries over such allegations are typically handled by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCC). After contacting the MOCC, Khaleej Times is expecting a response.

Food safety regulators in Singapore and Hong Kong banned four prominent Indian brands' spice items last week after discovering they contained ethylene oxide, a chemical known to cause cancer. Because of its carcinogenic qualities, the compound is controlled when used as a fumigant in spices to eradicate germs and fungi.

At least one of the affected firms, however, has responded to the accusation in a statement, claiming that they follow strict health and safety regulations. Following the announcement, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), India's regulatory body, launched its own investigation.

In the meantime, European Union (EU) food safety inspectors said that they detected ethylene oxide in 527 Indian items, including spices and herbs. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) discovered these during tests carried out between September 2020 and April 2024.

The civic body's spokeswoman stated that they are awaiting updates from several parties and would notify the public and media as soon as they have more details and a clearer picture of the situation.
