Both were profoundly religious, but fell for charismatic student Ben Field (Normal People's Éanna Hardwicke), who drugged and murdered Peter and preyed on Ann for her money.
The drama depicts Field's manipulation of both victims and the excessive gaslighting he perpetrated on them, as well as the police investigation into his crimes and subsequent high-profile trial.
It was written by Sarah Phelps, the author of A Very British Scandal, and commemorates Peter and Ann's lives as cherished mentors, cherished relatives, and cherished friends.
"When I received Sarah's brilliant scripts, I knew this was an essential story to tell," says Timothy Spall. "It is an honor to portray the remarkable Peter Farquhar, and I hope to do him the bare minimum of justice."

The Sixth Commandment is the story of Peter Farquhar, a 69-year-old retired teacher, novelist, and university lecturer from Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire, who bonded with Ben Field, a 30-year-old student, over their shared passion for literature.
Soon Field manipulated Peter into a fake relationship and convinced him to alter his will, making him the primary beneficiary, before drugging him with a cocktail of pills and adulterating his whisky.
He persuaded Peter that he was losing his mind, causing him to feel increasingly frightened and alone. Peter died in 2015, after which Field began a sexual relationship with Ann, Peter's 86-year-old devout Christian neighbor.
She passed away in May 2017, and Field was accused of plotting her murder but judged not guilty of the charge. In 2019, Field was sentenced to a minimum of 36 years in prison for Peter's homicide.
"Without the assistance, support, and insight of Peter and Ann's families, I could not have written this," says author Sally Phelps. "I'm so appreciative of the trust they placed in me to tell the stories of their loved ones."
