India is on its way back to the moon after a rocket launched Friday afternoon local time from Sriharikota, a launch site off the country's East Coast.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is essentially a redo, as India's first attempt to land a robotic spacecraft on the moon's surface nearly four years ago resulted in a crash and crater.

The launch of Chandrayaan-3 coincides with a renewed interest in lunar exploration. Both the United States and China intend to send astronauts there in the coming years, and a half-dozen robotic missions from Russia, Japan, and the United States could travel there in the coming year and the year after.

If the robotic lander and rover onboard Chandrayaan-3 successfully land intact, it will be a feat that no nation other than China has accomplished in this century, enhancing India's pride in its homegrown space program. In India, a number of commercial space startups are sprouting.

India and the United States reached an agreement last month to dispatch a joint mission to the International Space Station in 2019. The Indian Space Research Organization, India's equivalent to NASA, is also developing a spacecraft capable of transporting astronauts into orbit.

Friday at 2:35 p.m. local time (5:05 a.m. Eastern), the Launch Vehicle Mark III rocket launched from the Indian space base on an atoll north of Chennai.

As cheering masses waved Indian flags and umbrellas, the rocket rose into the sky. Sixteen minutes later, the spacecraft separated from the rocket's upper stage, and the mission control center erupted in applause and cheers.

"It is indeed a moment of glory for India," Jitendra Singh, the minister of state for India's Ministry of Science and Technology, said after the launch. "It is also a moment of destiny for all of us here in Sriharikota, who are making history."

In the coming weeks, the spacecraft will execute a succession of engine firings to extend its orbit before beginning its journey to the moon. A landing attempt is scheduled for August 23 or 24, coinciding with dawn at the landing site in the south polar region of the moon.

It is challenging to safely land on the moon, and many space programs have failed.

What is the name of Lander and Rover of Chandrayaan-3?

Chandrayaan means "moon craft" in Hindi. In 2008, the orbiter Chandrayaan-1 was launched, and its mission lasted less than a year. On July 22, 2019, the Chandrayaan-2 mission successfully launched, and the spacecraft entered orbit around the moon.

The landing attempt on September 6, 2019 appeared to be proceeding smoothly until the spacecraft was approximately 2.1 kilometers above the surface, at which point its trajectory deviated from the intended course.

During a news conference a few days ago, S. Somanath, the chairman of the Indian space agency, explained that one of the lander's five engines had thrust that was marginally higher than anticipated.

The spacecraft attempted to rectify, but the software imposed limits on the rate at which it could rotate. Even as it approached the ground, the craft was still some distance from its destination due to the increased thrust.

Mr. Somanath stated, "The craft is attempting to reach its destination by increasing its velocity, despite not having sufficient time to do so previously."
